Helping the Poor through Knitting

Nicaragua is the poorest country in Central America. There are almost no jobs, inflation is rampant, and those in charge seem to want to keep their people in desperate need and dependency.

Rosa knitting a Sheep Dreamzzz baby blanket

We began our 501(c) (3) charity, Sheep Not Goats, with a focus on providing employment in the rural community of Malpaisillo. We built a small farm and in 2018 began training women there to knit blankets that we sell in the US. This ongoing enterprise is called Sheep Dreamzzz Baby Blankets.

All of the proceeds minus basic costs like yarn go to the women who knit them so they can feed their families.

So all of our work from the US side - marketing/selling, the web site, buying yarn, IRS filings - all of it - is volunteer work on our part. We don't get a cut or donate just a token amount to the poor. You can meet our knitters here. They work in our small home in a safe, clean environment and are real experts at what they do.

So the next time you wonder what gift you can give for a new baby, please remember Sheep Dreamzzz. We know it is a mere drop in the bucket for world poverty overall, but for one woman-led family your choice will allow them to eat for a week while providing the satisfaction and dignity of doing it through the work of her own hands.

Thank you.

★★★★★ I love they are handmade with love and for a purpose. I plan to give mine as a baby gift. So beautiful and soft. Buying a baby blanket gives me the opportunity to be part of helping women help themselves❤️ Thank you!! - Loretta B.
